Implement These 3 Rituals to Help Your Remote Team Work Better

Episode Summary

Many people expect HR professionals to know the perfect way to approach remote work but we're really figuring this whole thing out right alongside you. I can't say I've perfected it but I have done a lot of reading and research on the matter. So how do we do this best? I'm going to be sharing some of my favorite tools, exercises, and rituals for remote work!

First and foremost, it's okay to give yourself some grace. You don't know what you don't know, allow yourself to test and try to see what works best for your business. Then, in order to make virtual work better, you have to get intentional with it! It's not as simple as just moving your workplace norms online, because as we've all realized, this doesn't quite work.

As you consider which rituals may work best for your team, you want to make sure the goal is clear. You also want to think about time and set a clear meeting cadence so that people aren't getting distracted or bored.

[1:34] Most of us don’t even understand why remote work is so tricky or feels so different than in person work.
[3:50] Why remote work is different from the way we used to work.
[6:12] When you’re in a virtual environment, you lose a lot of the norms that you get from in person meetings.
[8:52] The importance of creating rituals for virtual work.
[11:37] Rituals can help you feel more connected to the people in the meeting.
[17:10] Setting virtual ground rules for meetings.
[22:11] How to get your team to work better together in a virtual meeting.

"What if instead of immediately thinking it's not going to be as good, you were like, what if it could be? And figure out ways for it to be. Because there are a heck of a lot of companies doing it."

In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. Discovering tools, exercises, and rituals to make remote work more effective and connected.
2. Uncovering the benefits of using rituals to create moments, structure, and cadence in virtual meetings.
3. Exploring the concept of Public Display of Appreciation (PDA) to express gratitude to team members for their work.
